Everything You Need to Know About Family & Extended Family Portraits in Denver

Frequently Asked Questions About

Denver Family

& Extended Family Portraits

At Picture It Studios, we know that planning a family or extended family portrait session in Metro Denver can bring up lots of questions. Whether you’re gathering a group of 8 or organizing a full 32-person family reunion, we’re here to make the process smooth, comfortable, and rewarding. Below are the most common questions families ask before scheduling their portrait session — along with helpful answers from our experienced Aurora photographers.

Do you photograph large and extended families in Metro Denver?

Absolutely. Picture It Studios specializes in extended family photography for groups of 8 to 32 people — both in-studio and outdoors. Our photographers expertly arrange multi-generational groups so everyone looks relaxed, connected, and beautifully lit. We bring portable lighting and power sources to outdoor sessions, ensuring that even large family portraits have the same polish and clarity as our indoor studio sessions.

What’s the best location for extended family portraits?

That depends on your vision! You can choose our professional portrait studio in the Southlands Shopping Center (near E-470 & Smoky Hill Rd.), or select a scenic outdoor backdrop. Families often love Tallyn’s Reach Park, Southshore Boathouse, Cherry Creek State Park, or even Red Rocks for breathtaking portraits. No matter the location, we use professional lighting, posing, and color-balance techniques to ensure your photos look timeless and true-to-life.

How much does an extended family photo session cost?

Our basic extended family portrait session starts at $285, which includes three favorite retouched digital images and professional guidance throughout. The fee can be shared among participating families, and additional poses or groupings can be added for $75 each. We never rush large sessions — every extended family photo shoot is given the time it needs to create a meaningful experience and exceptional results.

What should we wear for family portraits?

We suggest coordinating, not matching. Choose complementary tones and timeless clothing that reflects your family’s personality. Soft, solid colors tend to photograph best. Avoid busy prints or logos that distract from your faces. During your free pre-session consultation, our photographers help you choose the perfect look — ensuring each family member feels comfortable and confident in front of the camera.

How far in advance should we schedule our family session?

For extended family portraits or multi-generational sessions, we recommend booking 3–4 weeks in advance, especially for weekends or holidays. Gathering multiple households can take coordination — and we want to ensure every detail is perfect. Early booking gives your family the best availability and time to prepare for a fun, relaxed experience.

What makes Picture It Studios different from other Denver photographers?

It’s our passion for creating portraits that feel as good as they look. We light and retouch every face by hand — ensuring natural skin tones, authentic smiles, and genuine connection. Our experience working with diverse families of all skin tones and backgrounds allows us to bring out the true-to-life beauty in every individual. We combine artistry, warmth, and technical precision to deliver portraits your family will treasure for generations.

Can you create both digital and printed wall portraits?

Yes! We provide both high-resolution digital files and beautifully printed and canvas wall portraits up to 40x60 inches, as well as leather-bound family albums. Many families choose both options — digital images for easy sharing, and physical artwork to display in their home. Our professional prints and canvases are made to last for decades, preserving your family legacy.
