More than 140 years ago, a father gathered his family for a portrait.

At the time, it was simply a family photograph.

Today, it has become one of my family's greatest treasures.

No one standing in that portrait could have imagined that, generations later, their descendants would still be studying their faces, wondering what their lives were like, and feeling connected to family members they never had the opportunity to meet.

A few summers ago, we photographed a thirty-two-person extended family that had gathered from several states. While they were together, we created portraits of the entire family, grandparents with grandchildren, individual households, siblings, cousins, and many other meaningful combinations.

One day, those portraits will become that family's history.

Family history isn't written only in names and dates. It's also preserved in the faces of the people who were together.

We Make Large Family and Extended Family Portraits Easy

Photographing a large or multi-generational family takes more than gathering everyone in front of a camera. We guide family groupings, expressions, and arrangements so everyone feels comfortable and each portrait reflects the people who matter most.

Before portrait day, we'll recommend the Portrait Location that best fits your family, discuss clothing, organize the family groupings you'd like to create, and develop a simple plan so everyone can relax and enjoy being together.

Whether you want one portrait of everyone together, grandparents with grandchildren, individual households, siblings, cousins, or several generations photographed in different combinations, we'll help you decide what matters most before your session begins.

If schedules simply won't cooperate, we can often photograph smaller family groups separately and combine them into one finished portrait.

Your job is enjoying the people you love. Our job is taking care of everything else.

Reviewing Portraits Together

One of the things that makes Picture It Studios different is that we don't wait until your session is over to discover something could have been better.

Throughout your portrait session, we'll occasionally review images together on the back of the camera. That immediate feedback allows us to adjust expressions, spacing, family groupings, lighting, and even small details like a shadow across someone's face while everyone is still together.

Those refinements can't always be corrected later on a computer. They are best corrected while the portrait is being created.

Families often tell us how reassuring it is to see the portraits as the session progresses.

It gives everyone confidence that we're creating portraits they'll be proud to display for generations.

Every Location Tells a Different Story

Where your family is photographed becomes part of the story your portraits will tell for generations.

Some families prefer the timeless elegance of a studio portrait.

Others imagine themselves beside a quiet lake, beneath Colorado cottonwoods, surrounded by the red rocks of the Front Range, or in a place that already holds special meaning to their family.

There isn't one perfect location. There is only the location that's right for your family.

We'll help you choose a setting that complements your family, your clothing, the season of the year, and the way you hope to enjoy your portraits in your home.

In-Studio Extended Family Portraits — $325

A professionally lighted studio portrait experience for extended families of approximately 8–25 people, including three selected, professionally retouched portraits.

Additional requested poses or family groupings are $75 each.

Outdoor Extended Family Portrait Experiences

Choose the outdoor portrait experience that best fits your family, your gathering, and the story you'd like your portraits to tell.

Additional requested poses or family groupings within each of the detailed outdoor experiences are $75 each.

Southlands Campus — $460

A beautifully landscaped location near our studio featuring convenient access and up to four family groupings.

Tallyns Reach or Southshore — $585

Lakeside scenery, waterfalls, walking paths, and park settings with up to five family groupings.

Aurora & Parker Portrait Experiences — $785

Choose from carefully selected parks, lakes, trails, and meaningful family locations with up to six family groupings.

Denver Metro & Destination Portrait Experiences — $885

Downtown Denver, RiNo District, Red Rocks, Roxborough, Washington Park, and other destination locations throughout the Denver metro area with up to seven family groupings.

If your family has some-other meaningful location in mind, we'd be happy to discuss it.

What Should Everyone Wear?

Coordinating clothing for a large family doesn't have to be stressful.

Rather than matching everyone exactly, we usually recommend a coordinated look with complementary colors that allows each person's personality to shine while bringing the entire family together visually.

Many families already have everything they need hanging in their closets. Others enjoy adding a few new pieces that complete the look.

Professional portraits are available at our Family Portrait Studio, both In-Studio or Outdoors, or On-Location depending on the selected portrait package.

* Wall Portraits come with a (mounted) backing to ensure your portrait will stand the test of time.

* A $75 booking-fee required at time of booking any collection at Southshore or beyond.

* Ideally, on-location sessions should be booked at least 1 week in advance, but sooner appointments may be available if requested.

* Collections' Contents are customizable

* Collections include all sitting fees.
